2. Computer Components

Purpose: Students will have a greater understanding of the components or hardware that makes up a computer.

Step #1: Sales Ads - Discovering The Primary Computer Components
Have students review the sales ads with their partner. They should highlight the computer terms that recur numerous times though out the ads

• Each student select 3 terms, write on 3 separate post it notes and stick to white board.
• Teacher will create a list - it should relect most of the terms seen below. 

Step #2A: Define
Journal: With a partner, 1. Go online and define the purpose of each of the primary parts shown below. Then share what you learned with your group, and eventually with the class (Write on White Board - in outline form.).

Step #2B: Flow Chart (Handout)

• Explain to the students how the Fruit Flow Chart Works.
• With a partner, students will fill in the empty Flow Chart with the terms above.

Journal: Students must create and present a scenario in which 2 Hardwares & 1 Application are used. 

• Example - Keyboard, Monitor and Microsoft Word. 
• Each student must share their scenario.
• Must explain what allows these different pieces of Hardware & Software to work together?   (OS)

Show & Tell - Provide Each Student with: Hard Drive, Processor, RAM  

• Each student should restate the definition of the item while the teacher holds it up.   

Step #3: Chronological Sequence 

1. “A student presses the power button on a computer. Then opens a file they created for English Class about George Washington using the software Microsoft Word.” 
2. Give the students the opportunity to guess the order in which each of the following hardware items and software are activated and why in that order. (Teacher will fill in the blanks).

• RAM
• M.S. Word 
• Operating System
• Hard Drive

1st – Let partners look at their definitions and flow charts and guess.
2nd – Show and Tell – start an old computer and let them hear the hard drive. Then pass around Hard Drives, RAM and Processors.
3rd – I will show each of the steps as it takes place.
