iPads, Apple Ids & the App Store – Getting them to function!
A large number of teachers are having difficulty getting their iPads to access the App Store. This is what I have learned while trying to help these teachers. The teachers seem to fall into 1 of 3 categories:
1. Teachers that wanted to link their new iPad to their existing Apple ID:
This was easy to do and most teachers did not experience any problems. All you need to do is enter your username and password when requested.
2. Teachers that wanted to link their new iPad to a new Apple ID (This account was meant not to be connected to their credit card)
This was also very easy to set up. All you do is connect the iPad to the Lenovo and the user is guided through several easy steps, including the creation of an Apple Id that is not connected to their credit card.
(Also, Karen sent out a step by step guide that is accurate and is helpful in this segment – you can find it attached to this notice).
· First create a new Apple Id. (you can go to this link: Create Apple ID ; please write down your new Username & Password!)
· Login to the Lenovo and the iPad. Connect the iPad to the Lenovo.
3. Teachers that initially wanted to link their new iPad to their existing Apple Id…but at a later date decided they did not want the school’s iPad to have their credit card information and decided to create a new Apple ID.
This category is a major headache to solve.!! I fell into this category. The step-by-step directions that were provided by the school district will not help the teachers in this category. Michelle Parker (SHHS) came up with a solution.
First create a new Apple Id. (you can go to this link: Create Apple ID ; please write down your new Username & Password!)
o Problem, it will not allow you to set up the account without your credit card information. So provide it… at a later step you will delete it!
· Removing your credit card information from the iPad
Setting Up the New Apple ID: Turn on the iPad. Select “Settings” on the Desktop. Select iTunes & App Store. Look at the Apple ID, it should be the personal one that you want to remove. Click on it…several buttons will appear, select Sign Out. Then click in the blank space next to “Apple ID” and enter your new Username, and then the Password. Your new Apple ID will appear.
o Select Settings / ICloud. I bet your personal Apple ID is still present. Scroll to the bottom and delete it.
o Stay in Settings / iCloud and enter your new Apple Id.
o Stay in Settings / iCloud. Click on your “Account: Apple ID”. Scroll to “Payment Information” Then select “None!
o Your School iPad no longer has your credit card information.
Also…Managing your media using iTunes
Currently, your school iPad can only receive files/games/video wirelessly. You can manage your iPad using iTunes. This would allow you to add or remove any video files, music files, etc. directly from your Lenovo. Follow the steps below.
· Install iTunes onto your Lenovo: (Search / iTunes. Result: iTunes Setup. Select it and let it install.)
o When iTunes is installed running on the Lenovo, ‘Agree’ when it asks and then, if the Lenovo asks what action it should take, ignore it (cancel) and just stay with iTunes. In the top right corner you will see a link that says iPad – select it. Then select “Continue” and the process to set up the computer will begin. Enter your new Apple ID Username and Password, when requested.
· When iTunes is successfully installed on your Lenovo, go to All Apps and pin the iTunes icon to your Start Menu.
· Removing your credit card information:
o Open iTunes Store.
o In the iTunes Store/Hm Pg, look at the Right Navigation bar for “Quick Links / Account.” Select it.
o Scroll to “Payment Type.” You will see your credit card number. Select “Edit”. Delete your credit card number. Select “None.”
· Note: at a future date, if you want an app that costs money, you will need to reenter your credit card information
· Select “Sign In”. You will be given the opportunity to create an Apple ID and payment information – select “None.”
· You can now begin managing all your media files on your iPad with iTunes on your Lenovo. |
