"Exploring Computer Science" (ECS)

Exploring Computer Science (ECS) is the Introductory level in a two-course series.

Unit 1: How Computers Work
Students will learn about the hardware that makes up a computer, how they are used and what allows these machines to function.

process Unit 2: Problem Solving Process
Students will solve problems by planning a strategy, designing solutions and then reflecting on their strategies.
html Unit 3: HTML & Photoshop
Students will begin their experience of developing programming skills by building web pages using HTML. They will also learn Photoshop, a graphics program that will add functionality of their web pages.

Unit #4: Scratch Coding
This is real coding (C++) made fun. No more syntax error - you will learn how to code dragging blocks. Eventually you will create your own computer game!

 

ev3 Unit #5: Robots
Students will utilize their coding skills to build and program robots to compete in a variety of activities.
Unit #6: Engineering (3d Printing)
Students will design and draft the specs for a radio controlled car (RC). They will create a Computer Aided Design (CAD) of their drawing and then send it to a 3d printer to become reality. Finally, the students will race each other on a 'series' of tracks they create around campus.
nasa Unit #7: Careers in Tech!
Over the course of the year, students will get to visit a number of companies in the Tech World, will be visited by Tech speakers from a broad range of occupations and have the opportunity to be awarded an internship with the S.H.U.S.D. I.T. Dept. Eventually, students will begin to look at the value of their own experiences and craft their own resumes.
